When gum disease has reached past the gingivitis stage, it can no longer be treated with simple improvements to your oral hygiene. At this stage, plaque and tartar have reached below the gum line and requires professional intervention to remove. Scaling works to break down plaque that’s collected below and above the gum line, while root planing works to smooth out the tooth roots. This allows the gums to reattach to teeth and prevent future recession.
Typically done in tandem with scaling and root planing, our dental office provides antibiotic therapy to prevent the future development of gum disease. Furthermore, antibiotic therapy kills any remaining bacteria that may still be left over after scaling and root planing. Since periodontal therapy usually takes multiple appointments to complete, we’ll pay close attention to your gum tissue to confirm that the antibiotics are working properly.
